Chiropractors: What They Do and Why You May Need One

Most people have heard of chiropractors, but few know exactly what they do. A chiropractor tends to symptoms and effects of neuromuscular disorders or those health complications that have to do with the nerves and muscles. Typical treatment involves manual adjustments and manipulation of the spine. Although most of their work focuses on taking care of your spine, the effects of their treatments have benefits for the body as a whole. They note the relationship between the spine and the nervous system as a whole and believe that reducing pressure on the sensitive neurological tissues can improve the overall health of a person.

Going In For A Visit

A trip to the chiropractor is much like making a visit to other healthcare providers, though there are a few unique distinctions. These doctors use non-surgical interventions in their treatment, using a particular tool in their treatments. Chiropractors use a special treatment table to perform procedures for their patients. These tables allow for specific, strategic positioning of the body as the chiropractor moves and re-positions it. This enables them to isolate certain areas while maintaining the patient’s comfort level and improving functioning.

What To Expect

Chiropractors can assist in the treatment of a variety of ailments, including lower back pain, headaches, leg pain, sports injuries, repetitive strains, and arthritic pain. After intake, the chiropractor will ask about the specific parts of the body that are causing the patient discomfort. He/she will then conduct a routine exam before moving on to a spinal assessment and specialized physical exam. The physical exam includes a variety of bodily assessments: range of motion tests, comparisons of muscle strength, reflex testing, orthopedic checks, and neurological tests.

Following the assessment, a chiropractor will develop a personalized treatment plan that considers the extent of the injury or discomfort, the location, and the patient’s general health and goals. A typical treatment will be made up of adjustments. A chiropractic adjustment is done by completing a therapeutic adjustment using controlled force. The chiropractor will manipulate the corresponding body parts using direction, leverage, amplitude, and velocity on the joints. These adjustments are typically made to the spine. However, other joints, such as the knee, elbow, wrist, shoulder, or ankle can be made in order to restore alignment and improve joint functioning. Proper functioning at every joint and bodily extremity forms a large and important component of overall health, so letting seemingly small cricks and kinks go untreated is certainly a risk.

Don’t hesitate to get help next time you’re body feels pain, it’s trying to tell you something.
